Berlageblokken

Home

Welcome to the Berlageblokken campaign website! The English version of the site is slightly different to the Dutch version, and - because it takes time to translate information - usually also a few steps behind. But hopefully it can be kept up-to-date with the most important information! If you can help with translation (NL->Eng), don't hesitate to get in touch!.

To see a full explanation of the issue, visit the about section of the site. However, here's a one-minute summary of what is going on.

Renting tenants of the three Berlageblok flats (Berlageblokken) in East Amsterdam are struggling for affordable, secure-tenancy social housing and consequently have come into direct conflict with housing corporation YMERE which owns the Berlageblokken. This is because YMERE desperately wants to get rid of the Berlageblokken and replace it with more lucrative, non-social forms of accommodation. (There is a truly chronic shortage of affordable housing in Amsterdam.) Berlageblokken residents are refusing to leave and others are assisting in this resistance by occupying empty rooms in the Berlageblokken, and rooms that become empty whenever a Berlageblokken renter departs.
